Is it possible to add memory to a computer externally?

Deborah asked:

I think my PC is a bit short on memory. I would like to double it - but I don’t want anyone to take it to bits.
So is there any way of increasing the computer’s total memory externally, without having to mess around inside the casing?
I think the answer is “No”, but I don’t know much about computers.

If you’re running Vista, there’s an option built in that will allow you to use usb thumb drives and SD cards as memory. This should be considered virtual memory however and system performance improvement would be minimal.

The quick answer is “no”, that’s not possible.

I understand that if you have Windows Vista you can use a USB thumb drive as auxilliary memory.
But it is not hard to increase memory, takes about 15 minutes and certainly a fast way to speed up your computer.
I would bet that you can find some local geek that will help you do it for a diet coke.

This wouldn’t add physical memory to your computer but…

You can purchase an external hard drive to gain extra physical memory from any technology retailer. Depending on how much memory you want you could pay anywhere from about $50 - to over $200 dollars. Now if the memory you are referring to is RAM, then, to my knowledge, it would be necessary for someone to go into your computer (”take it to bits” >smile
