What is the difference between these two types of computer memory?

i am trying to upgrade my computer and there are two types of the same memory. so what is the difference between Pc-4200 desktop memory and Pc2-4200 desktop memory? i have no clue.

    They are the same speed but a totally different architecture. DDR2 is the newest version and is incompatible with computers that use the original DDR.

    Go to and enter your system information into the applet they have on the main screen.

    That will tell you whether you need the original DDR (PC-4200) or the newer DDR2 (PC2-4200).

    If your computer is more than a year old, I can almost guarantee you it is the original DDR.

    its like this dd2 has 240 pins and ddr1 or ddr has 184 pins 2 diff motherboards its liek putting a sqar peg in a round hole

    DDR stands for Double Data Rate.

    Earlier versions of DDR memory are designated DDR, and DDR2 represents an improvement in the clock speed - like the second version.

    Most computers will specify the type of emeory you’ll need, if necessary go to the manufacturer website, or call their technical support number.
