eyepopping hideous female troll asked:

lets say I found a old computer at a garage sale that had a 1GB compatable memory chip inside it to my current computer. if I buy that computer and take the memory chip out of it , can I wipe it clean & install it into the current computer I have. like a “new” memory chip?

Yes. A RAM chip will clear it self if you leave your computer off(But plug in) For 5 minutes. Most ram emptys out after windows shuts down.

Hmmm… A RAM chip is erased (or actually does not retain information) when the power is off so you can safely move it from one machine to another. Now if you have a 1gb memory chip such as one you’d find in a camera or MP3 player, that would retain it’s info. Yes, you could erase the info on that one and make it empty as if it were new.

You need to know the ram speed (pc100, pc3000, ect.) Your computer may not be able to handle the memory chip. You also need to know what kind of memory your computer can accept and use along with the max amout it can handle.

You can always try the memory from the other computer, but you also have to consider the voltage applied to the memory chip..
